Why every child should get a Rubik’s cube this Christmas

Invented in the mid-70’s by Hungarian architect Erno Rubik, the Rubik’s cube is one of the most popular toys of all time. Over the last 45+ years, people of all ages have taken on the challenge of solving the 3-dimensional puzzle, yet only an estimated 5.8% of the population have been successful.

Despite popular belief, the low success rate isn’t down to the cube being too difficult to solve. Anyone can solve it. It just requires a lot of patience and focus which is where most people fall short.

 

So, how does it work and how will it benefit my child?

To solve the cube, your child will need to learn a couple of algorithms. Don’t worry, it sounds a lot scarier than it is! An algorithm is essentially a list of step-by-step instructions that must be followed in a sequence in order to solve a problem. Once you master the first algorithm, the others will follow much more naturally.

This part of the process can actually improve patience and focus – essential qualities in any computing role. It can also increase speed and boost muscle memory which is great for coding and any other role that requires typing.

As you come closer to solving the puzzle, you’ll start to get a better understanding of how the cube actually works. This can have a positive effect on your child’s problem-solving capabilities, forcing him/her to think ahead and discover new ways to solve the colourful cube.

Learning to solve the Rubik’s cube comes with a number of benefits that will help your child in the real world, but it’s also a great conversation starter, an amazing achievement and something they will always be proud of.
